Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon chopped onion
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion salt
  • 10 slices processed cheese (such as Velveeta), divided
  • 4 hamburger buns, split

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and chopped onion over medium heat until the beef is no longer pink, then drain.
  2. Sprinkle the mixture with cornstarch, stirring until it’s well blended.
  3. Add diced tomatoes, oregano, salt, and onion salt, and cook uncovered for 5 minutes, allowing the mixture to slightly thicken.
  4. Add six slices of cheese and stir until the cheese melts and blends into the beef mixture.
  5. Place the split hamburger buns cut side up on an ungreased baking sheet, then spoon approximately 1/4 cup of the meat mixture onto each bun half.
  6. Cut the remaining cheese slices in half diagonally and place a piece over each meat-covered bun half.
  7. Broil the assembled buns 6–8 inches from the heat source for 3–4 minutes or until the cheese is melted.
